Diversity, Equity & Inclusion In The Workplace

DEI - Diversity, Equity & Inclusion In The Workplace

Diversity refers to the beautiful fabric that makes us all valuable as human beings.  This fabric embraces a range of human differences that include:  race, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical ability, social class, religious, and political beliefs.

Equity refers to the measuring of the fabric to balance the playing field and ensure that people are treated fairly & impartially.

Inclusion refers to the weaving in of all of these diverse fabrics with the goal of creating a beautiful masterpiece.

In view of the above, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) in the workplace is the needle and thread to a company’s continued success.  DEI, when part of a company’s strategy, will lead to its continued competitive advantage.  Therefore, recruiting and leveraging diversity becomes a welcomed thread.  Nevertheless, sometimes it's hard for companies to know where to start.  Still others are not sure if they're doing enough to create an inclusive environment, while others are content to just check the box without any systemic change in how they do business.

Where is your company on this spectrum?  Are you ready to learn more about how DEI can be embraced and used as a tool to bring your team closer together, boost team morale and at the same time enable them to be more productive and innovative?   If so, look no further then SRD!

SRD employs fun and educational teambuilding activities to demonstrate how DEI can be that welcomed thread that weaves your team together.

Change Managemet

Change Management ~ Embrace the New

DEI - Change Management ~ Embrace the New

Why do most people hate change?  The answer is as simple as a four-letter-word…FEAR.  False Evidence Appearing Real.  Most people fear the unknown.  So sometimes they imagine what could happen if a change is made.  They may base this on past experiences of when change was not a good thing.  Or they may base this fear on what they have heard from others.

Given this dynamic, what can a company do to empower their staff to embrace change?  Demonstrate that the old way of doing things is NOT better.  Demonstrate that their FEAR can be overcome by a sound plan and calculated action.  Demonstrate that the benefits outweigh their trepidation.

SRD employs fun and educational teambuilding activities to demonstrate how Change Management can be used as a tool for growth and fresh opportunities.

Conflict Management ~ Make a Friend

DEI - Conflict Management ~ Make a Friend

Do you hate conflict?  Most people do.  Why is this?  This is because most people do not want to offend, disappoint, or get into an argument.  While those are valid concerns, they tend to keep us bound in a cycle of insanity.  We have all heard the saying: “Insanity is when we do the same thing over and over again but expect different results”.

When one dares to put their solution down and listen to the ideas of another, this is when Conflict Management can be used as a tool.  After all, for most things, there is more than one way to accomplish a goal.  Why not have the courage and humility to listen to other ideas?

SRD employs fun and educational teambuilding activities to demonstrate how Conflict Management can become a useful tool.

Generational Differences ~ Engage Age

DEI - Generational Differences ~ Engage Age

In most American workplaces, there are 4 generations working together.  Who are they? Based upon most studies (give or take a few years in either direction), they are born within the following eras:

  • Baby Boomers: Born from 1946 – 1964

  • Generation X: Born from 1965 – 1980

  • Millennials: Born from 1981 – 1995

  • Generation Z: Born from 1996 – 2010

A retailer could have a Baby Boomer welcoming their customers at the door, while a Generation Z person could be the cashier.  On top of that, a Millennial could be the supervisor of everyone, including a Gen X’er who thinks they could do the job better.  This dynamic has caused many companies headaches as they try to navigate these complicated generational waters without capsizing the ship.  How can a company do this with ease without alienating or favoring one group above another?

SRD employs fun and educational teambuilding activities to demonstrate how Generational Differences can be embraced with appreciation and respect.

Systemic Racism ~ It's In The Water

Systemic Racism ~ It's In The Water

DEI - Systemic Racism ~ It's In The Water

Systemic racism in America is a term that is new to some but has been felt by millions of Blacks, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) since this country's inception.  What does it mean exactly and what can you do about it?

Systemic racism refers to the discrimination or unequal treatment of a particular ethnic group (typically one that is a minority or marginalized), arising from systems, structures, or expectations that have become established within society or an institution.  The effects can be seen in all aspects of society from the schools to the judicial system and everything in between.  In this country, those that have been the most adversely affected are Blacks and Indigenous people.

Understanding and confronting systemic racism is complicated but is best summed up and addressed by the "Groundwater Approach".  The Groundwater Approach is a metaphor that illustrates that systemic racism is similar to groundwater.  It permeates every body of water that the groundwater feeds into.  Since America's foundation can be said to be steeped in racism, it only stands to reason that racism permeates every aspect of society.  An objective look at systemic racism underscores the following:

1. Racial inequity looks the same across systems

2. Socio-economic difference does not explain the racial inequity

3. Inequities are caused by systems, regardless of culture or behavior

Confronting the reality that America was built on racism means recognizing that we have a "Groundwater Problem" and we need "Groundwater Solutions".

SRD employs fun and educational team-building activities to demonstrate how your company can utilize the Groundwater Approach to address any tainted water that may have slipped into your company's water supply.

Unconscious Bias ~ Hidden Prejudice

DEI - Unconscious Bias ~ Hidden Prejudice

When reviewing resumes, are you tempted to interview Becky Taylor over Sharelda Jenkins?  Or are you tempted to interview Paul Black over Pamela White?  Let’s take it further.  Are you tempted to interview Brandon Williams over Ishiyuki Takemura?  If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, why?

Let’s say that all of these people have the same experience and education.  The only difference is their names.  Without ever seeing these people, whom would you choose to interview?

If honest, some would admit that they would interview Becky over Sharelda because Becky sounds white.  They would also interview Paul over Pamela because Paul is a male.  Finally, some would also interview Brandon over Ishiyuki because Brandon sounds like an American that was born in the US, rather than an immigrant.

Does being honest about these unconscious biases make us a bad person?  No, it makes us human.  Without realizing it, ALL of us have unconscious biases.  In other words, we ALL have hidden prejudices that we are unaware of unless they are brought to our attention.  When our unconscious biases are exposed or uncovered as unreasonable, how do we respond?  Do we make excuses for our biases?  Or do we acknowledge our hidden prejudices and seek to uncover their origin and endeavor to eliminate them?

SRD employs fun and educational teambuilding activities to demonstrate how Unconscious Bias can be exposed and eliminated with knowledge.

Contact SRD today to discuss how we can empower your company to make sound judgments based upon knowledge and not hidden prejudice.

Women In The Workplace ~ The Sky Is The Limit

DEI - Women In The Workplace ~ The Sky Is The Limit

Who are making the biggest splash in the workplace?  Women are making big contributions to the workplace today and they are breaking down walls that were designed to keep them out of industries that were historically male.  Women are also breaking through the executive glass ceiling.  In fact, studies show that companies that have women who are in board positions outperform companies without their voice.

Nevertheless, women still face obstacles that they need to overcome and turn into opportunities.  For example, no matter how successful some women are, they can still suffer from "imposter syndrome".  In addition, others may feel like their hard work is not being recognized.  Having knowledge and a supportive network can help women to continue making their mark on their respective industries.

SRD employs fun and educational teambuilding activities to demonstrate how Women in the Workplace can be equipped, inspired, and set free to soar to new heights of success.
